Art has always been a visual language that communicates or expresses emotions, thoughts and ideas. At Whittingham Primary School, children explore this visual language in its many forms. They continuously gain a better understanding of how to manipulate materials to form sculptures and prints as well as painting and drawing. Throughout their time at Whittingham, children build on their previous knowledge of materials to hone their practical skills.
Art involves four key concepts: observation, inspiration, expression and reflection. The children of Whittingham learn to see art as a journey of exploration and development rather than the making of an isolated creation. They observe and analyse a range of art styles from different time periods to expand their understanding of what art can be. It is encouraged that they find inspiration in others (and what they observe) so that they can express themselves. Reflection is an important part of their growth as an artist so class discussion that reflect on work is an important part of the learning process.
